Ring of Fire: Mexico and Central America

  • Latin America has significant geothermal energy potential with multiple high-temperature volcano-hosted hydrothermal resources.  Most remain available to be progressed.
  • Mexico has developed geothermal energy for the past 40 years, but significant resources remain untapped even though the country is one of the top geothermal electricity production countries globally.  There are more than 1600# hot springs and ~900# geothermal systems with ~40% having temperatures 100-149°C with some hotter.  Five geothermal plants are in operation with exploration ongoing for additional locations.
  • Guatemala has two geothermal fields with installed capacity of 52MW.  Future fields are being evaluated.
  • El Salvador has three geothermal fields with installed capacity of 204MW with increases planned.
  • Nicaragua has 12# sites identified for geothermal potential across the Pacific Volcanic Mountain Range. Two of these areas have been developed so far.
  • Costa Rica has two large geothermal fields with installed capacity of 252MW.  Another geothermal field is planned to be developed with 2x55MW plants, with additional prospects identified.
  • Panama has an active stratovolcano Volcán Barú that last erupted in the 16th century and has had multiple seismic swarm events indicating activity.
