Carbon Dioxide Compression

  • Uses mature technologies found in large scale fertilizer manufacturing plants and natural gas pipeline transport. Centrifugal compressors are typical for large volume applications. The main operating issues are corrosion and hydrates;
  • Dense liquid phase is better than gas transport, so CO2 would be compressed above 74 bar (7.38 MPa) for efficient transport. Booster compression may be required along the pipeline to make up for pressure losses to keep the pressure above 74 bar. Typical inlet pressures are >103 bar (10.3 MPa) to maintain the supercritical phase;
  • Water content is controlled with glycol dehydrator or molecular sieves. CRA used in compressor piping.
